Scholarships

The following list does not obligate the Alva Independent Schools to award any or all of the scholarships and awards listed. This is merely an attempt to inform the student and parents of scholarships/awards most often awarded to AHS seniors.

Seniors: These are just a few of the scholarships available to you. Please take advantage of the vast numbers of scholarship listings on the Internet. Also, the counselor receives scholarship applications all of the time for the first time. Please listen to the AHS announcements. All scholarships are announced twice a day for three days and then posted.

All applications are due in the counselor's office by March 30, UNLESS otherwise stated on the application. It is the senior's responsibility to have these completed and in the counselor's office in a timely manner.

Alva High School Achievement Award (Share)
This award is in the amount of $1,000 a year for four years for a total value per student of $4000! This award was established in the 1986-87 school term. Only students for whom Alva Independent Schools is currently receiving state aid will be eligible for these scholarships. Ten seniors will receive the awards of $4,000 in 8 consecutive semesters for furthering their education. Guidelines set by a committee and the Share Board must be followed in order to receive money. Awards are presented at the Awards Assembly and not announced until that time. Students must have a 3.0 GPA to apply. Applications are available in the counselor's office and online in MS Word Format and PDF Format. Deadline for application is March 22. In addition, two (2) selections will be awarded annually by the Share Scholarship Committee to juniors who have completed graduation requirements. All junior applicants must have a 3.0 grade point average at the end of five (5) semesters of high school to apply.

Alva Hospital Authority Scholarship Fund
The Alva Hospital Authority will offer a scholarship not to exceed $1,500 to an individual desiring to enter the medical field and who has at least a 2.75 gpa. A representative from the foundation's committee at the spring senior awards assembly will announce the winner of this scholarship. The scholarship will be issued directly to the educational institution to be used for tuition and all related fees, room and board, books, and required material, and living expenses in that order. This scholarship will be paid the student's junior year when prove of enrollment as a full-time student who has maintained a 2.5 cumulative gpa. Student must attend a 2- or 4-year college, university or career/technical school. Applications are available in the counselor's office and online in MS Word Format and PDF Format. Deadline for application is March 22.

Alva Lions Club Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a college student at NWOSU.

Alva State Bank Scholarship
This scholarship is given through Alva State bank in honor of C.W. Wisdom. The value is $500.00 for two semesters for a total of $1,000.00 to NWOSU only. Recipient is selected based upon character, financial need, school activities, community activities, and scholastic achievements. All applicants must have a 3.0 GPA at the end of 7 semesters and be ranked in the top 60% of his/her graduating class. Applications are available in the counselor's office and online in MS Word Format and PDF Format. Deadline for application is March 22.

American Legion Awards
The American Legion presents citizenship awards to two senior boys and two senior girls. They are selected by the senior class on the following basis of character, courage, companionship, scholarship, honor, leadership, and service from a nomination list compiled from faculty. This award is presented at the awards assembly. No application.

Cargill Community Scholarship
Applicants must meet the following criteria: 1) be a senior; 2) plan to attend a two or four year college, university or vocational technical school. Students must complete an application and a 200-word essay. In addition, a student who wins this scholarship, also wins money for the school library. If you are a son or daughter of a Cargill employee, you can apply for one of the scholarships in that category. Applications are available in the counselor's office and online at http://www.cargill.com/commun/scholar.htm. Application deadline is February 15.

Central National Bank of Alva Scholarship
Central National Bank of Alva offered for the first time in 2003 a $1000 ($500 each semester for one year) scholarship. Seniors must have a 3.0 GPA at the end of seven semesters of high school to apply. The selectee will be chosen based upon Character (25%), Scholastic Acheivement (25%), Maturity (25%), and Concern for others (25%). The award may be used at the college, university or state-accredited vocational school of the selectee's choice and may be used for tuition, books, fees, or room and board. The student must have a 2.75 GPA at the end of the first semester to get the award for the second semester. All students may apply including the dependents of bank employees. The bank will not make the selection. Applications are available in the counselor's office and online in MS Word Format and PDF Format. Deadline is March 22.

Chapter E.T. , P.E.O.
A $200 cash scholarship for one school year will be awarded. The purpose of this scholarship is to promote the education of women. The applications are mailed to the homes of each senior girl. The applications are judged by the educational committee of Chapter E.T. , P.E.O. for above average scholastic achievement, courtesy, dependability, responsibility and high moral character. Financial need is not a consideration, but applicants who have all educational expenses paid through other scholarships and/or grants are ineligible. Applications are available in MS Word Format. Senior girls are encouraged to take time to apply for this scholarship. Deadline is April 30.

Community National Bank Scholarship
Applicants must have graduated from Alva Middle School and attended all four years of high school at AHS. The scholarship is in the amount of $500.00. Award is based on 60% for GPA between 2.75 to 3.25; 20% for involvement in extracurricular activities; and 20% for student's ability to work well and get along with other students and teachers. The scholarship is jointly payable to student and the college of the student's choice. Applications are available in the counselor's office and online in MS Word Format and PDF Format. Deadline is April 1.

Bill Crenshaw Baseball Scholarship
Recipient must be an active senior member of the Alva High School Baseball Program (may be a player, manager, scorekeeper, or any other actual participant in the baseball program) and must have been active in high school baseball for 2/3 of member's high school years in which member was eligible to participate. Recipient must also be a good student and maintain a 3.0 GPA or better. All baseball program members and coaches will vote on recipient; each will cast only one vote. Voting will be done by secret ballot. Scholarship is in the amount of $1000.00 ($500.00 per semester) directly to the recipient. No application.

Daughters of American Revolution Award
The faculty chooses three seniors who best exemplify outstanding qualities of Dependability, Service, Leadership, and Patriotism. From the three selected seniors, the senior class chooses the schools DAR Good Citizen Award. Recognition of winner is made by the DAR and also at the awards assembly. No application.

Elks Top Ten Leadership Award
This award is made available through the local Elks Club. The applications are made available in MS Word Format or PDF Format. Deadline for application is March 22.

Elks Scholarship
This award is made available through the local Elks Club. Awards vary. This is a lengthy scholarship application and requires parents and students to notarize statements concerning financial status. Deadlines are set by the Elks organization. The applications are made available on Elks Foundation website.

Earl L. Geis Scholarship
After many years of service as school superintendent, this scholarship in memory of Earl Geis was established by teachers, PTA, his wife and others. Many teachers will make donations to this scholarship. Applications are to be made through the high school counselor. The recipient shall be someone who has not received a prior scholarship. The recipient must attend NWOSU. It will be based primarily on financial need, with other conditions taken into consideration. This award is worth $250.00. Applications are available in counselor's office and online in MS Word Format and PDF Format. Deadline for application is March 22.

Enid Beauty College Tuition Scholarship
Enid Beauty College awards a tuition scholarship for $1,000 to be awarded in May to a graduating high school senior. The deadline for the application and endorsement is May 1. Application and Endorsement are available in PDF format.

Goldbug Alumni and Friends Scholarship
This scholarship is in the amount of $200. This scholarship may be used at NWOSU for room, board, books, and tuition. The scholarship is for four years and is given to an average student (2.5-3.5 GPA) who has "stick-to-it-ness". First given in 2002, the scholorship will not be awarded for a four year cycle unless funds are available. If funds are available, it will be announced.

Roger Hackler Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Roger's father, Leroy Hackler. Roger was tragically killed in an accident in 1979. The award is available to NWOSU only. Applications are available in the counselor's office and online in MS Word Format and PDF Format. Deadline for application is March 22.

G. Omar Hill Football Award
The G. Omar Hill Football Award is presented to the senior player who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership, value to the team and scholarship. The player is elected by the members of the football squad. A $350.00 college scholarship is presented as well as a gold football charm (if available). Football boys and coaches make determination of this award. It is presented at awards assembly. No application.

Household Executives Scholarship
The local Household Executive Club wishes to make available to Alva High School Seniors a $100.00 scholarship to NWOSU to a boy or girl who has been outstanding in the either FFA or Home Economics. Applications will be in counselor's office and online in MS Word Format and PDF Format. Deadline for application is March 22.

Norville and Georgia Ann Johnson Scholarship
This scholarship is a memorial to the Johnsons. To be considered, the applicant must be an AHS senior; make application through AHS; have at least a 2.5 GPA; and meet admission standards for NWOSU. Preference is given to the student with greatest need. Applications are available in the counselor's office and online in MS Word Format and PDF Format. Application deadline is March 22.

Kiwanis/Key Club Scholarship
Preference will be given to Key Club members; however, all seniors may apply. The $500 scholarship may be used at the college/university of the student's choice and will be issued directly to the student winner in the fall of his/her junior year of post-secondary education by the Kiwanis Club of Alva upon request of Alva High School counselor. Applications are available online in MS Word Format and PDF Format.Deadline for application is March 22.

Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Knox Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of Conrad and Cora Knox, former teachers in the Alva Public School system who were killed in a plane crash. The scholarship was established by family members and is worth $200.00 and available to NWOSU only. There is no formal application for this scholarship. Outstanding students from the science department and those planning to enter elementary education are considered by the anonymous committee.

Masonic Lodge Student of Today Awards
Teachers select one boy and one girl for this award based on outstanding performances in Citizenship, Leadership, and Scholarship. This award is given at the awards assembly. No application.

National FFA Scholarship
The National FFA has compiled an extensive list of scholarships. The brochure usually arrives in the Ag Department and the counselor's office in December. Application deadline is February 15. Mr. Nation usually receives the booklet in which these scholarships are listed. Ask your FFA instructor or ask the counselor to help you with these. Scholarship information may be obtained on the National FFA Website.

Nescatunga Arts and Humanities Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship is selected by a committee of Nescatunga members. Committee members will consider the following factors: achievements in the arts (visual art, music, writing, and drama), high school and community involvement in art and other activities as well as the thoroughness and attention given to preparation of the application. This scholarship should be typed and instructions should be carefully followed. Applications will be available in the spring and are available online in MS Word Format. Deadline for application is April 1.

Northwest Technology Center Scholarship
Students who graduate from AHS may apply for a scholarship which covers tuition for up to 1050 hours in a daytime program at Northwest Technology Center. The scholarship may only be used during the first two years upon graduation from AHS. The scholarship may only be used for tuition, not book or other fees. Oklahoma Association of Chiefs of Police & Oklahoma Police Chiefs Tainting Foundation
This scholarship program is open to any high school senior or college student. The applicant must show enrollment into an Oklahoma college or university prior to the issuing of any funds. Scholarships will be in the amount of $500.00 per student. Applicant must be sponsored by an active member of the Oklahoma Association of Chiefs of Police. Applications are available in the counselor's office. Deadline July 15.

Oklahoma Chapter NFL Players Association
Two $1000.00 scholarships will be awarded to one female athlete and one male athlete. The scholarship will be awarded to Oklahoma students on behalf of the Oklahoma Chapter of the NFL Players Association. Applications must be submitted by the student's coach and must be in accordance with the brochure provided by the association.

Oklahoma Coaches Association Scholarships (OSSAA Scholarships)
The Bob R. Williams, Scholar Athlete, and Region Athlete of the Year Scholarships are awarded each year. Contact counselor for more information. Dates are on calendar in counselor's office.

Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence
Academic All-State honors 100 public high school seniors with a $1000.00 scholarship and honors the selected seniors' high schools with an Academic All-State flag to mark their commitment to academic excellence. Students must be nominated by their superintendent or principal. Students must meet one of the following criteria: ACT Score of at least 30; SAT Score of at least 1350; National Program for Outstanding Negro Students Semi-Finalist; or National Hispanic Scholar Awards Program Semi-Finalist. Applications are available from the counselor or online at http://www.ofe.org. Deadlines are usually in December!

Oklahoma Reserve Law Officers Association
Applications are available in the counselor's office. Awards are given to young people who want to enter the Police Science field. As many as fifteen scholarships are given throughout the state. Deadlines are announced in the spring by the organization.

Oklahoma Rural Rehabilitation Corporation
This is a scholarship grant for a graduating senior for his/her first year of advanced education. The eligibility and amount given will be based on the net worth of property owned by the student, parents, and income available to the family. Scholarships are available to residents of Oklahoma only and the student must obtain his education in Oklahoma. Deadline due in ORRC office by April 15.

Lela O'Neil Scholarship Fund
A scholarship fund is established in the memory of Lela O'Neil for a deserving student in the field of home economics or vocational agriculture. All seniors interested in these fields and enrolled in Woods County high schools and plan on attending NWOSU are eligible. The scholarship is $100.00 for one year. The selection is made by the extension club. Applications are available in the counselor's office.

Deidra Palmer Memorial Scholarship
Deidra Palmer was a member of the graduating class of 1988. Because her dream of obtaining a college education was tragically ended, her family has established this scholarship in her honor. Deidra had plans of attending NWOSU and majoring in either mass communications or journalism. Because of these desires, her family awards this scholarship to an Alva High School senior planning to attend NWOSU and majoring in mass communications or journalism or the scholarship may be awarded to another student who has a similar major no applicants declare a major in mass communications or journalism. Applications are available in the counselor's office and online in MS Word Format and PDF Format. Deadline for application is March 22.

Iris Pettit Memorial Scholarship
The Iris Pettit Memorial Scholarship is given by her two daughters. There is no application to complete. Selection will be based on the recommendations from each of the athletic coaches in all of the sports areas. It is to be used for any post secondary education. The money will be given to the school when proof of enrollment is received.

Principal's Leadership Award
Sponsored by NASSP and Herff Jones, Inc. This award is to afford principals the opportunity to recognize one of their student leaders and to nominate that student for a national scholarship. Applications are available in the counselor's office as well as online at http://www.herff-jones.com/impact/pla.htm. Deadlines are usually in November or December of the applicant's senior year.

Sheldon Sherman Memorial Scholarship
This memorial scholarship is given to a graduating senior boy or girl from Alva High School who is a member of the FFA and plans to attend Northwestern Oklahoma State University to major in the field of agriculture. Application Deadline is March 22. Applications are available in the counselor's office and online in MS Word Format and PDF Format.

Bill and Connie Sperry Scholarship
This scholarship is $500.00 per semester for up to four years (a minimum of $4,000) which is subject to continued enrollment and progress in college. Sixty percent (60%) is based on scholastics and forty percent (40%) is based on financial need. Seniors must have 3.0 GPA or higher and attend Oklahoma State University. Deadline is March 22 .The applicant will be chosen by the OSU Scholarship office.  Applications are available in the counselor's office and online in MS Word Format and PDF Format.

Thiesing Basketball Scholarship
This award is presented to a senior student based upon his or her basketball ability, citizenship, need and scholarship. The award is valued at $250.00 and available to NWOSU only. An anonymous committee makes this choice. It is announced at the awards assembly. No application.

Wal-Mart
Recipient may attend any college or university. Scholarship based on ACT scores, grade point average, number of family members living at home, extracurricular activities and work activities and need. Recipient's name will be added to the Wal-Mart School Trophy each year. Wal-Mart committee selects winner from surrounding area towns that Wal-Mart services. The award is valued at $1,000.00. Applications will be available at your local Wal-Mart Store or Sam's Club. Applications will not be available to students through the high school counselor's office, the Wal-Mart Foundation or the Internet. The application must be completed and mailed along with all requested information by the postmark deadline date. The deadline dates sometimes change. Applications available starting February 1. Applications are online at Walmart Website.

C. W. Wisdom
One scholarship of $1000 ($500 per semester) will be given to the selectee. Applicants must be a graduate of Alva High School and demonstrate the desire to study for a health-related degree. Applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average based on a 4.0 scale. Selectee must attend NWOSU as a full-time student. Scholarship applications are due in the counselor's office by March 22 each year. It must contain the signature of the applicant and the signature of one parent or guardian. Presentation of the scholarship award shall be made during the end-of-school awards assembly and appropriate publicity shall be released at that time. The Wisdom Scholarship will be paid from the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Foundation. Applications are available in the counselor's office and online in MS Word Format.

The Women's Club of Northwest District, Oklahoma Federation
A $200.00 cash scholarship will be given to one male or female in area schools. Student must attend Panhandle State College or NWOSU. Applications are available in the counselors office. Applications are mailed by student and must be received by April 1.

Additional Information

Scholarships should always be typed if possible. Typewriters are available in the business classroom as well as in the library and office.

ROTC 4-year and 2-year scholarships in each of the branches of the service as well as the Oklahoma National Guard Tuition Scholarships will be awarded also.

Oklahoma Higher Learning Access Program (OHLAP) -- Must contract during 9th or 10 grade and have an income of $50,000 or less confirmed once. Pays almost all of the tuition to Oklahoma schools of post secondary education and higher ed.

The Oklahoma Heritage Scholarship will also be awarded.

Federal Financial Aid Grants and Loans (FAFSA applications are available online and in the counselor's office. However, they cannot be mailed until after December 31.

Other Scholarships on the Internet

There are a number of free Internet search databases you can use as you search for scholarships. These services ask for personal information such as your age, activities, organization affiliations and career interests. Then they provide you with a list of scholarships that match your profile. Remember they are limited, so you will definitely want to expand your search through the counselor's office, a career center or reference library.
