Individual Career Academic Plan (ICAP)

Posted Date: 01/09/2020

Goal Area:  Curriculum and Instruction

Objective 2:  Increase Awareness of Career Pathways

Initiative 1:  Individual Career Academic Plan (ICAP)

  1. Disseminate ICAP information to all stakeholders (employees, kids, parents, community members)

  • Professional development was provided for all employees at the all school inservice by Mrs. Karen Koehn.  Mrs. Marteney submitted an editorial for the newspaper explaining ICAP, When I Grow UP.
  • Prior to this year, elementary schools were not providing any formal awareness of the ICAP, only casual conversations about college/careers.  The elementary schools are  building awareness of what the ICAP is and how students can be considering careers in their futures.  Elementary counselors are creating awareness through discussing career readiness and introducing career clusters during group counseling sessions, which are held once a week.   The state department has provided a free online curriculum on ICAP called Kuder Galaxy. The goal of this program is to create self-awareness, encourage completion of their education, broadens career awareness by featuring a wide variety of careers.  Alva Public Schools elementary students are beginning this program in 3rd grade and will implement during their group counseling time.  At the 4th and 5th grade levels, the counselor is planning two Career Fairs where community business members will be able to explain their careers to expose students further.
  • At Alva Middle School, Mrs. Heaton will go into the classroom to discuss ICAP.
  • At Alva High School students have been divided into groups of 15-18 per staff member.  These groups meet once a month to discuss ICAP.
